Blog post #2 - Part 1
I learned on Saturday that I’m old by some of the technology mentioned by my classmates
as we discussed our technology journey over the past 20 years, I had even forgotten
what things looked like and needed visual representation as it seemed so far
removed from my current existence. I also realized that over the years we can
see the progression in our technological journey as a nation, what was noteworthy
is how far we have come. It was a time
to connect and bridge the gap through this exercise. I can definitely say that technology changes life;
it enhances communication and adds flavor to our existence. Emigrating from a
different country, Tango helps me not only talk but see my family members. Before
I relied on post office mail which seems like an eternity if you are awaiting a
reply on a question, then email became a big thing with instant messaging now
video phoning is the way to go. Speaking across the ocean to my homeland is now
just sitting in my living room with Ipad in hand. Love the progression as it
makes communication instant for me.
Part #2
I learned that my journey with technology was much similar to
many of my classmates today.
I learned that we are
all embracing a brave new world that is very different to what we grew up with
in the 70’s and 80’s. We all have had frustrations as we tried to learn new technology
and we all hope for more of these wonderful playthings for next Christmas. It
was evident from my conversation with classmates that many times we have no
idea how the technology works, and that it takes a while to learn how to use and
that we can waste our time with technology when we should be doing something
more “useful”.
Much to my surprise, many of the women in my age bracket I
spoke with, were just as hesitant to explore technology beyond the scope of “tools
of usefulness” as I was. It was evident that the more technology one grew up
with the more willing they were to explore and use. Most of all I learned that
technology can be quite fun and intriguing, the more one emerges him or herself
into its use the more proficient you become.

I would have to say
that my personal learning network comprises of my colleagues at work, the
internet and many other avenues that enhance my learning and provide quick responses.
I google just about everything to find answers to questions I do not know. I am
also a part of a cohort of other administrators and we work together on
refining our craft as educators. We collaborate frequently and attend
conferences to help us stay abreast with all the changes that are taking place
in the world of education. Learning never stops for those who work in
education, and it is our responsibility to keep up with what’s out there so we
can better meet the needs of our students. It is not acceptable when the
students know more than the teacher.
